A growing family trend is that many couples aren’t getting married. Some couples cohabitate and jointly raise their family , and some simply share family responsibilities. This arrangement continues to gain popularity in the United States cohabitating couples and their children made up approximately 15 million households in the 2012 U.S. Census.
By taking an alternative path, non-traditional families have already placed authenticity along with honesty, directness, and self-respect high on their list of values. There is also a great deal of respect for the needs of others and when a conflict occurs, differences are respected and choices are jointly made.

Nontraditional families suffer under the weight of guilt and grief as a result of their particular family structure . They often feel isolated and alone, as if no one else could possibly understand…, It is extremely important for nurses to acknowledge nontraditional family structures because understanding what constitutes “family” for a particular societal unit aids the nurse in assessment and intervention for family health promotion (Green, 2018).
